Turning the Tide – 1979: Learning the lessons of Leicester’s biggest-ever protest against racism

African Caribbean Centre, Maidstone Rd, Leicester

In 1979, race relations were tense in Leicester.  There was increasing support in local elections for candidates of the National Front. The trade union movement felt compelled to respond. Through the Trades Council Anti-Racist Committee (ARC) a local movement was built and on April 23 10,000 people responded to the call to ‘stop the NF’.  Participants talk about the events both before and on the day, the subsequent prosecutions and the changes it brought in  Leicester. The talk will be illustrated by contemporary leaflets produced to argue the case against racism. There will also be an anti-racist book stall.

How the West Was Lost

Upstairs at the Western pub,
Western Rd, Leicester LE3 0GA

Let the Bard of Windmill Hill turn the absurd, bewildering and frequently frustrating aspects of modern life into laughter fodder for you! Witty, ironic and waspish, this is social comment and cerebral stand-up at its best. He has been praised by the BBC’s Dr Phil Hammond for the range and depth of his work. This could be just the prescription you need.

The show is a treatise for our troubled times, encompassing tragedy, history and comedy; satire, philosophy and social comment; drama theatricality and hilarity. It’s a tour de force of epic dimensions.

Best show award Shaftesbury Fringe Festival 2018. Judges’ report: “well constructed, original and funny… sharp and often unexpected… a real pro… a clever and original voice”.

Absolutely wonderful. One of the best evenings ever.” Leicester Secular Society, April 2019.
