| FIND OUT Stockport Libraries have joined a regional project whose aim is to involve socially excluded youngsters in reading as a creative activity. We aim to demonstrate that libraries are a welcoming place, where you can hang with your mates, read a book or magazine or explore the World Wide Web. Currently three projects are in development at Stockport Central Library, Dialstone and Marple. In the Offerton area we want to consult young people about creating a new reading collection for young people at Dialstone library. We are also working with a group of young people to create a piece of graffiti artwork to be displayed within the library. At Marple we are building on the successful work of the Reading Lifelines project by working with young parents on a Guide to Relaxation. We are meeting every Thursday from 1 till 3pm in the library and after Easter we will be running a series of relaxation workshops with everything from Crystal Healing to Kick Boxing. At Central library we've already had a successful event, Blind Date with a Book, where people were offered the chance to break with their reading habits by borrowing a book with its identity concealed. Holden Caulfield made an appearance and he wowed the masses with his unique brand of urban poetry. Coupled with this we've placed a book collection at Central Youth for young people to read and entered into partnership with the Millennium Volunteers to investigate the decor of a young persons area. The next step is a consultation exercise to discover what young people want from Stockport Central Library. Ultimately, we would like to form a young persons consultative group to help us in the development of a dedicated area in the library. So if you're interested give us a buzz, and help us introduce someone to the magical world of reading. |
