A ruthless and determined man, the elder Simon was driven from his English lands by King John, and sought the county of Toulouse instead. The Albigensian Crusade (1209-29) massacred Cathar heretics and their supporters, apparently indiscriminately. Claire Taylor argues that this actually increased support for the heresy in the region, until the arrival of the medieval inquisition.
